How To Compost In 30 Seconds //

I have been SO excited to talk about this for a while now, because it's something that is SO easy and SO helpful to the earth. Today, I am sharing WHY you should compost and how freaking easy it is-- yes, even if you live in a one bedroom apartment.

Okay, so what is composting? It's the natural process that changed food waste into rich soil. Compost is like pure gold in the gardening community because it's super rich in vitamins and minerals and helps those fruits and veggies grow better and healthier.

But why do I care about composting if I don't have a garden? Food scraps account for 19% of what is dumped into landfills, which is crazy because composting is SO easy. When the food rots, it turns into a methane gas Methane is a greenhouse gas, which means it's efficient at trapping radiation, which means it's contributing to climate change. Yikes.

So how do I compost when I don't have a garden, land, worms, soil, bins, or know the first thing about composting?

I'm with you. I searched high and low for a solution to my inability to compost (both in my own laziness of not wanting to deal with bins and worms and such, but also living in a one bedroom apartment) so here's how I do it!

I keep a large bowl in my freezer. Every time that I have food waste from cooking, or leftovers that I need to toss, I put them in the bowl.

When the bowl gets full, I take the bowl and put it in a reusable bag. Then, I put that bag in the car and run some errands while it thaws out. Alternatively, you could take the bowl out and leave it in the bag for an hour or so before you need to leave to drop the compost off.

TIP: If you put your coffee grinds in your compost bowl, it won't smell!

Next, I head for Mom's Organic Market, which has a composting bin in the front of their store. Each week, a local farm in the area comes to pick up the compost and uses it in their soil! I love that! If you don't have a Mom's by you, check and see if your local Whole Foods has a composting bin. Or if you are in a more rural area, you may have to call and see if a local farm will take your compost. I also know that farmers' markets will usually take your compost as well. If you can't find a place to take your compost at first, don't worry. Keep looking around and you will find a place eventually!

I just dump the compost in the bin and voila! I'm done and I've kept all my food scraps out of the landfill and done my part in helping reduce climate change and I'm helping some farm in my area create super rich soil for their plants.

Yes, it takes a few minutes out of your day to drop the compost off, but if that's all it takes to help reduce food waste in landfills and love our planet, it's totally worth it. I've been doing this for almost a year now and it's very doable!
